Munna Bhai chale Parliament?

During his just released film Dhamaal’s premiere at a Mumbai multiplex, Sanjay Dutt admitted he is looking forward to joining politics. The Munna Bhai star had even attended the premiere donning typical modern day desi neta attire.

Neta Se Abhineta?

Looking at his politician like avatar at the premiere night, when we asked him is he seriously thinking of becoming a politician, Dutt told us, “Yes I am joining politics.” Then taking a long pause added, “May be.” Dutt’s sister, Priya Dutt is already a Member of Parliament and represents North Mumbai constituency for Congress. She had won the same seat, earlier represented by Sanju’s dad, Sunil Dutt. Amongst Dutt’s closest pal, who has always been there with him right from the beginning of his TADA court ordeal till now, is sitting MLA Baba Siddiqui who also belongs to Congress.

“If Dutt seriously decides to take a plunge into politics after completing his pending films, his natural option for joining a political party would be the Congress,” says Sanju’s close pal. “But one cannot forget the open vocal support Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackrey had given Dutt when he was arrested in 1993. It was reported that Sunil Dutt actually visited Bal Thackrey and requested him to help to his son get out of this matter. After Sanjay Dutt had got bail that time, Sunil Dutt had not stood up for election in his constituency against a Shiv Sena candidate, Madhukar Sarpotdar at that time as a repayment of sorts. But it is less likely that the Dhamaal star would even consider joining Shiv Sena despite that considering the support some Congress Ministers from the Central Government are giving to him since the time he has been arrested,” the pal adds.

Adds Baba Siddiqui, “It will be definitely good if he joins politics and our Congress Party. We all congress cadres from Bandra are currently busy with the Bandra Fair and will definitely discuss this proposal once it’s over.”

Another senior congress leader from Mumbai, Sanjay Nirupam told us, “I don know whether he is joining the Congress or not, as far as I know this decision will be taken into consideration by the party high command in Delhi. But Sanjay Dutt joining Congress will be really good news.”

A source close to the Dutt family though comments, “The Congress senior leaders are smart. They will only involve Dutt in active politics one he is cleared of his offences. Then they might offer him an election ticket too. He has a very popular image with the aam junta. Which party would like to not encash on it?

Bollywood insiders are claiming it is Sanju’s recent jail yatra that has been instrumental in him considering becoming a politician. “He is a very changed man since the time he has come back from Yerawada prison. He has become more spiritual and is not talking movies at all,” says a close pal of the actor.
Earlier it had been reported that, two years back the controversial star had a tiff with sister, Priya over standing for the by-election on their father’s seat. He was even interested that time to contest elections.

But Dutt’s industry buddies are openly avoiding commenting about whether he should join politics or if he could make a good politician or would he be taken advantage off for his naivety in the dirty world of politics.

Films come first

Sanjay Dutt has to surrender back to the Court on September 27. Though till date after being out on bail since August 23 he hasn’t shot for any of his pending films, he intends to do so at the earliest. Dutt’s secretary Kalim claims, “I don’t know about his political aspirations as he has never discussed them with me. I wasn’t at the Dhamaal premiere so cannot say what he has on his mind. He is definitely looking forward to shoot for his films that are stuck before he surrenders.”

Dutt has films like Alibaug, Kidnap, Mr. Fraud which to be completed and a total of Rs 200 crores is riding on him.
