The district administration conducted raids at three sites in Aashiana locality here on Monday and confiscated huge quantity of fake medicines.
The first place was a factory by the name of Aneo Pharma owned by one Ram Lakhan Shukla, the second his rented house in Ramgarh and the third spot was his son’s house in Vishnulok locality. Notably, this is the third such raid within a week. Three persons were arrested in this connection. In all spurious medicines worth around Rs 15-20 lakh were recovered by a team comprising district magistrate Chandra Bhanu, senior superintendent of police BP Jogdand, chief medical officer AK Shukla, nagar swasthya adhikari Gurucharan Singh and personnel from Krishna Nagar police station. The team revealed that though no packing machines and equipment were found, packaging material showing a Kolkata address worth lakhs of rupees were recovered.Six women workers, employed for pasting labels on the bottles of medicines, were also detained. Later, they were allowed to go. Ram Lakhan Shukla, his cousin and manager Bhagwati Prasad Shukla and son Rajesh Shukla have been arrested. Another person, who is the owner of a small printing press, was also detained. He was suspected to be the printing labels for the Shuklas. Accounts and attendance registers were also confiscated. The register showed that at least 10-12 persons were employed by Shuklas for the purpose of putting labels on suspected bottles of expired medicines. The bill-book of the company showed a licence issued from Kanpur. But it was found to be a fake address. Most of the packaging material had a Kolkata address, which sources in the district administration revealed, did not exist. Talking to reporters, Chandra Bhanu said that Ram Lakhan and his son Rajesh, natives of Kanpur were running the illegal unit for production of allopathic and ayurvedic medicine and also a packaging material for food supplements. The business was spread across three spots on the Kanpur Road. “We will book them under National Security Act, Gangster Act, Copyright Act and Acts relating to misuse of brand names and Sections 307, 420, 467, 468 and 471 of IPC, SSP,” he said. It seems that the culprits used to procure expired medicines of established brands, put fresh labels and sell them in the market, said the team members. Shuklas used to buy expired medicines only to refill them with medicines manufactured in his factory. Syrups were manufactured in Ramgarh factory, which was a few yards away from the rented house of the senior Shukla. Some bottles of medicines were such that they could be used only after breaking them. As such these could be used only once. “We will investigate why these medicines were not destroyed by the company after expiry as per rule,” Chandra Bhanu said. Hundreds of bottles containing black syrup with their seals intact, were recovered. “They needed to just paste the labels and sell them,” he said. |
