GAIL wins Dun & Bradstreet Award
Gail India Ltd has announced that the Company has been selected as the top Indian Company in the Gas-Processing, Transmission and Marketing Sector for the Dun & Bradstreet Corporate Awards 2007. Dr. U D Choubey, Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL received the award on behalf of GAIL from Mr. Manoj Vaish, President & CEO, Dun & Bradstreet, India. This is the second time that GAIL has received this award.
The corporate awards have been launched to recognize the twin virtues of size and growth in the top organizations of corporate India. The awards recognized the best organizations spread across various sectors such as Oil and Gas Exploration, Power Generation, Banks, Software and IT, Fertilizers, Cement, FMCG and others.
GAIL is India’s premier Natural Gas Company. Having started as a gas transmission Company during the late eighties, it has grown organically over the years by building a large network of Natural Gas trunk Pipelines covering a length of around 6700 km. with a capacity to carry 148 MMSCMD of natural gas across the country. GAIL’s share of gas transmission business is 79% and the Company holds 70% market share in gas marketing in India. The Company is also planning to lay 5 new pipelines and in addition, augmentation of 3 existing pipelines is also being taken up. This will lead to doubling of pipeline length and transmission capacity in the next 4 to 5 years.
Apart from natural gas, GAIL has interests in the business, LPG, Liquid Hydrocarbons and Petrochemicals, the latter being value-added products. GAIL has also diversified into Exploration & Production, City Gas Distribution and is steadily developing an overseas presence etc.
GAIL recorded a revenue of Rs 16,047 crore and a PAT of Rs 2,387 crore in FY 2006-07.
In Gas Processing, GAIL has 7 LPG plants in the country. In 2006-07, total Liquid Hydrocarbon production including LPG was over 1.343 million metric tones. The Company produced 1.03 million MT of LPG during the year 2006-07, whereas the Propane production was 178752 MT and the Pentane production was 72827 MT. GAIL is the only Company in India which owns and operates pipelines for LPG transmission. It has a 1900 km LPG pipeline network, 1300 km of which connects the Western and Northern parts of India and 600 km of network is in the Southern part of the country. The LPG transmission system has a capacity to transport 3.8 MMTPA of LPG. LPG transmission through LPG pipelines was 2.491 million MT in the year 2006-07.
In a strong demonstration of GAIL’s commitment towards development of city gas distribution sector in the country, the Company’s Board has recently approved the formation of a fully owned subsidiary for city gas distribution projects and CNG corridor. GAIL was the pioneer of City Gas Distribution projects in India for supplies to households, commercial users and for the transport sector by forming Joint Venture Companies. With Natural Gas emerging as the fuel of choice in the country, GAIL believes that the next decade will belong to the city gas. GAIL has formed eight Joint Venture Companies for city gas projects in various part of the country. On the global front, GAIL has established its GNG and City Gas presence in Egypt through equity participation in Fayum Gas, Shell CNG and Natgas, Egypt. It has also acquired stake in China Gas Holdings for CNG opportunities in mainland China.
